Conn Smythe Trophy Winners: A History

Most Valuable Player in the Stanley Cup Playoffs

Six players have won the trophy as a member of the losing team in the Cup Final.

The Conn Smythe Trophy is awarded to the most valuable player throughout the playoffs chosen by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. The trophy was first awarded in 1965 and is named after Conn Smythe, the general manager and coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs who won the Stanley Cup four times.

Centers have been awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy 25 times, more than any other position. Right wingers have won the trophy 18 times, left wingers have won 16 times, and defensemen have won three times.

The most recent Conn Smythe Trophy winner is Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche, who won the award in 2022. Makar is the first defenseman to win the award since Duncan Keith in 2015.
